DRAGONFLY VOLUNTEERS DELIVER ADORABLE, FUN CROCHETED WINTER HATS AND “WIGS” FOR YOUNG CANCER PATIENTS AND SIBLINGS/OFFSPRING AS PART OF ITS “MAGIC STRANDS FROM LOVING HANDS” PROJECT
On Friday, December 2nd, more than 100 custom crocheted hats and some “wigs” will be delivered to The Dragonfly Foundation’s patient/family space. The caps will later be given to young cancer patients and their siblings/offspring at an upcoming Dragonfly patient/family event.
Inspired by seeing an Elsa* “wig” that was created by the Magic Yarn Project®, Shelly Allen, a volunteer for The Dragonfly Foundation, spent the last year learning to crochet. In October, she, along with 5 other Dragonfly Volunteers crocheted caps and 15 others (who learned how to cut and assemble yarn accessories), transformed hats into cartoon and movie characters as part of Dragonfly’s “Magic Strands From Loving Hands” project. Some of the hat designs include “hair” made of yarn, such as the one designed to look like an Elsa “wig.” All the hats created for Dragonfly were designed in controlled circumstances and made to Dragonfly and Magic Yarn Project standards to maximize enjoyment and minimize the risk of infection.
The Dragonfly Foundation will be presenting young patients and their siblings/offspring with the hats during its annual holiday party at Great American Ballpark. The holiday party is among the 3-12 patient/family events Dragonfly holds each week — and in addition to the many quality of life programs offered by the organization.
The Dragonfly Foundation provides support, caring distractions, events and opportunities to young cancer patients (0-30) and their families. The organization works to mitigate the stresses associated with the emotional, physical and financial toll of cancer and bone marrow transplant treatment, recovery, and maintenance. The Dragonfly Foundation is a light in the dark for young cancer patients and their families. To help us shine brighter, please visit or donate at Dragonfly.org or text TDF to 91999.
*Elsa is a character from the Disney movie, Frozen.
