Ali Hausfeld is looking to break a record and crack a smile.
The Lakota West High School senior is suiting up to run the Flying Pig Half-Marathon while dressed as an emoji.
Hausfeld is running to raise funds and awareness for the Dragonfly Foundation, a local organization that helps kids battling cancer find strength, courage and joy, so that big grin she'll be sporting as her costume during the race is no coincidence.
"The whole mission of 'spread smiles' just fit well and we ran with it. Quite literally," said Hausfeld.
So far, Hausfeld's raised $1,600, and she's already making quite the impression within her school community.
There's another twist: She's looking to break the world record for fastest half-marathon dressed as an emoji.
From the halls of Lakota West to the official course, Hausfeld will still have her cheering squad with her and that emoji costume on. But there's one more thing she'll need to validate her entry to the Guiness World Records.
"We'll have 13 different mile marker teams at every mile marker of the half-marathon, and their job is to help us raise funds and awareness for Dragonfly, but also to take pictures that we need to send our evidence to (Guiness World Records)," said Hausfeld.
The official time to beat is 2 hours, 30 minutes. Hausfeld is aiming for under 2 hours.
"(I'm) a little nervous, but more excited than nervous. I've been training since January for this, so it's just time to have fun now," said Hausfeld.
It's a hard feat that Hausfeld hopes will bring a smile to those on the course and to those impacted by childhood cancer.
